Backup your website to help keep your online presence safe

website design 2 min read

Your new website looks great and is bringing in customers. You know you should backup your website but it's one of those jobs you keep meaning to do but never seem to get around to.

And then....

Disaster strikes!

Your entire website crashes or is hacked, leaving you scrambling to fix the problem.

Do you a have a current copy of your website available to quickly upload and install on your host?

Do you have time to recreate your website again? Or update all the changes that have been made since it first went live?

It's Super Important To Backup Your Website

And don't let anyone ever tell you otherwise.

Here are a few reasons why having a backup is so crucial:

1) Your website gets hacked.

Yep, this does happen and more often than you might think.

There are little bits of code known as 'bots' creeping around the interwebs searching for vulnerabilities in websites.

Once a vulnerability is found, access can be gained to your site. Your website can then be used in some not-so-pleasant ways or brought down completely.

2) Your hosting provider disappears or breaks down.

Every website needs a host, and a great host is well worth the investment.

But even the good ones may drop off the face of the earth, leaving you without a website.

3) You lose income.

If your website is actively generating revenue for your business, whether by E-commerce or as a simple referral site, not having your website up means no income coming in.

Having a backup copy available means your site can be quickly reinstated or moved to minimise loss and get you online again ASAP.

4) You lose time rebuilding your site.

If your website needs to be rebuilt, time is required and time is money.

Even a simple DIY website has a significant amount of time and resources invested; having to start again from scratch is incredibly disheartening, not to mention costly.

How to get started with backups

There's really no excuse to not backup your website when it is as easy as installing a reliable backup plugin and spending a few minutes tweaking the settings.

A WordPress backup plugin I like is UpdraftPlus.

UpdraftPlus allows you to make a copy of your site and download it for safe keeping or move it to a new host.

It allows you to backup your website files and database on a schedule right into the cloud (Dropbox, Google Drive, FTP, and more) and restore them with a single click.

Leave it to the experts!
